Ah, winter in Northeast Tennessee. Freeze one day, burn the next. Last night at midnight it was 66 F, but twenty-three hours later? It’s 11 p.m. and 33 F. This is why everyone is getting sick… Okay, that and flu season is peeking here.
It’s Saturday, so it’s time for Rainbowsnippets*! This one is uniquely mine, but there are lots of other great snippets to read, so after you finish here click the FB link at the bottom of the post to discover other great LGBTQIA authors and their works.
Cent, from Cleaning House and Mama etc. is the protagonist in my current #WIP, Keeping House, and she’s currently butting head with another character, Dane Gow, she-king of the Hunter Fey, so you’d best pay attention to the king…. or you might get hurt.
The first sentence, in orange, is Cent’s and she’s swiftly losing her patience with Dane.
“What now?”
“That Seelie blade snuggled against your thigh reeks like month ol’ corn mash settin’ in the summer sun.” Dane tapped her nose. “Hunters can smell metal, but your nose ain’t trained enough to know the differences. Besides, you can’t have weapons at a circle or did you forget your beau’s rules?”
“Stowne’s my eternal, not my beau, and that’s a rule at every circle.” Cent placed her hand over her blade. “This goes only if you and your men disarm too.”
Yep, Dane and her guards have come to Stowne’s Brigid circle armed. This is definitely more than a faux pas. So what would you do? Ignore it? Roll with it since Dane obviously knows Cent’s armed too? Or would you call her out on it and risk your own weapon or, worse yet, a fight?
Guess we’ll find out Cent’s approach next week. 😊
*RainbowSnippets is a safe and welcoming space for LGBTQIA+ authors, readers, and bloggers to share 6 sentences each week from a work of fiction—published or in-progress—or a book recommendation. Feel free to join in!
Go, Cent!

She’s trying hard to call it like it is.

Ooo power games! I’m not a big fan of rules, I guess if I had a weapon too I’d let it slide but then I’d be constantly trying to figure out where she was going with all this and probably blurt that out at the wrong moment – doh. I wonder what Cent will do? Guess I’ll have to wait and find out! 🙂

Definite power games. And we’ll find out soon enough.

Sounds only fair, although I’m not sure which would be the better plan…depends on if Cent’s relatively better with the blade or hand-to-hand.

I don’t think Cent’s either, TBH.

I don’t think she really has any choice. Okay, she does, but why roll over so easily?

Heh! Go, Cent! Call her on the hypocrisy!

That’s a dangerous thing to do, but Cent’s up to it, I think.
