So what’s up with me? Writing. Formatting. Posting. Getting a book ready for the publisher I work with. It’s a great YA title, and she joined #WIPpet Weds last week!
Otherwise, things are quiet here, but I’ll soon be gearing up for another release of my own. It will either be 1) the first novella in a series set in the Surrogate series or 2) a holiday novella set in on Embreeville Mountain where Cleaning House and Keeping House take place. Either way, it’ll be a November release, so I’ll be posting from it when I finish what I’m in the midst of sharing, which is the prologue for…
Welcome to WIPpet Wednesday*. This week, I’m sharing more from the sequel to Cleaning House, Keeping House, which is truly still a WIP. I’m almost finished with the rough draft though. Actually, I’m 99K into the work, and I’ve sketched out the ending, but I’m taking a break to work on the novellas I mentioned above.
We’ll see.
The focus in the prologue for Keeping House is the character Dane. She has a dark history, and I’m shoving you headfirst into it. The prologue is set in the year 1603.
Here’s how I picture Dane back then: young, desperate, and angry.

Here’s my WIPpet math for 8/22/2018 – 2-2+2=2 paragraphs from Keeping House, book two in the Appalachian Elementals series.
This WIPpet picks up right where the last left off, but I’ve included the final line from last week (in yellow) to help you along.
“Th’ men are bringin’ back more than enough for this night, an’ there be none here me age besides ‘er.”
Duff looks down the mountainside to see his men carrying two large bucks, properly butchered and ready for the roasting hearth, enough meat to feed their thirty-six-member community for three days. “Ye fancy ‘er?” He considers the Tsalagi woman then Dane’s soft curves beneath her skirts as he offers her one of his most dashing smiles. “Aye, sweet Dane, ye may chain her in yer room, a proper pet if th’ deal suits me.” Duff assists Dane to her feet and lifts her head, brushing back her wild raven locks to kiss her cheek as he pushes as spell deep into her, drawing, compelling, knowing her wants as well as he knows his own. “’Er life for me needs met. Deal?”
Dane tremors in his hold, resisting his spell though she is desperate for what she desires. “This Ah know, sir, will be what happens, magic or not, so… deal.” She wants the Tsalagi woman more than she can express. This one. No other. Dane’s heart is tightly tangled with her beautiful catch, so she jumps into the deal before she fully thinks, shuddering when Duff pulls her close, hissing his want before he kisses her.

*WIPpet Wednesday is a blog hop hosted by Emily Wrayburn wherein writers share excerpts of their latest WIP. All genres and levels of accomplishment are welcome. The only stipulation is that the excerpt must coincide with the date in some manner. For example, on 10/8/14 you might share 10 lines from page 8, 8 paragraphs from chapter 14, or perhaps 18 sentences by doing WIPpet math and adding the day to the month. We’re flexible like that.

Ah, I’m thinking Dane should have thought through the deal a little better.

Definitely, but when you’re sixteen…

Sounds like a pretty heavy price to pay for what she wants. I hope it’s worth it, but I fear it’s not.

When you’re sixteen, you don’t know what true desperation is until you’re staring it down, and then it’s too late.

Oh, poor Dane. Hopefully things will work out for her.

It’s a long time between 1603 and 2018, so we’ll see.

I’ve finished formatting, and I’m on to proofing said formatting. Great new author, maybe you’ve heard of her? 😎

I don’t read YA often, but Dane’s character seems a match to young adult readers, impulsive, perhaps driven by lust, with hard lessons ahead. This snippet is set in the 1600’s, and you hint at time travel to contemporary times, promising a fascinating read. So Duff is using magic to get what he wants. Hope he has lessons ahead as well.

Well, Keeping House isn’t a YA novel. The one I’m formatting is but, yes, King Duff has his coming. Keeping House is primarily set in 2018, so Dane’s a lot older, jaded, and wiser now. She’s also king if that’s any indicator.
