#CleaningHouseNovel Spinning Wheels to Celebration: Playlist Songs 1-10

This is my first post in a short series highlighting the playlist for my upcoming novel, Cleaning House – A Contemporary Appalachian Fantasy. Why a playlist for a novel? Why not? Music is important. It helps set the mood. It’s… okay, I’m a music fiend. I love it. I used to play several musical instruments, have written a few songs (long gone, so don’t ask), and briefly considered a career in the music industry. Needless to say, I love music. Different genres, unconventional arrangements. You’ll see both of these on my playlist.

Today I’m highlighting songs* 1-10 on the list, adding a quick note about each choice while not giving any spoilers.

1) “Fingers to the Bone” Brown Bird

Because we all work overly hard at one point or another in our lives, and there’s a tragic note to this band’s history that you can read HERE.

2) “Call Me” Shinedown

A great song by one of my favorite bands. Who doesn’t need a reality check every now and then?

3) “Innocence”  Halestorm

Sometimes, we must learn things the hard way.

4) “Time Warp” Rocky Horror Picture Show

Oh, why the heck not? And, yes, the cult classic is involved in the chapter

5) “I’m Afraid to go Home” Brian Hyland

An older song by an artist most have forgotten, but it’s so fitting the chapter that I couldn’t help myself

6) “Black Cadillac” Shinedown

Yep, Shinedown again. There are many ways of getting somewhere, so why not do it in style… or not?

7) “Strange Brew” Cream

A psychedelic dream of a song befitting the chapter

8) “Like a Stone” Audioslave

I have my reasons for this one you’ll understand well when you read. 😉 And RIP Chris Cornell

9) “Water” Cellar Darling

A short, endearing tune that will remind you of water’s multiple, um, natures.

10) “The Circle” Blackmore’s Night

Circles are important in pagan traditions. This one is no exception.

One song per chapter. A glimpse into an author’s brain as she writes. This is a contemporary Appalachian Fantasy so expect Rock, Bluegrass, Christianity, and Paganism to intermingle. Scheduled novel release date: 8/1/18 by Mountain Gap Books.

Release Date: 8/1/18

Centenary Rhodes is an old soul with a well-traveled name, but she doesn’t know this yet.

Growing up in southern Appalachia wasn’t easy, so Cent left home as soon as she could, but the post-collegiate happiness she’d expected has never occurred. She can’t find a decent date, much less find that special someone and, after losing her job in a corporate downsize, she’s struggling to meet her most basic needs. Her car has been repossessed, her bills are piling up, and her questionable North Chicago neighborhood is dangerous to navigate.

Returning home to Hare Creek, Tennessee, never crosses Cent’s mind until her Great Aunt Tess contacts her with an offer she can’t refuse. The family’s southern Appalachian homestead must be sold, and Aunt Tess needs someone to clean it up. Cent will have access to Aunt Tess’ garden and truck and can live on the homestead rent-free for as long as it takes. A part-time job is waiting for her as well.

It’s a chance to solve some of Cent’s financial woes, but will her return be enough when evil sets its sights on Embreeville Mountain and the homestead?

Cleaning House is a carefully woven Appalachian tapestry of granny magic, haints, elementals, and the fantastic diversity of the human condition – served with a delicious side of fries and a generous quart of peach moonshine.

*I take no credit or make no claims concerning the songs. I simply like them and believe they fit the chapter I’ve associated them with.

All images, aside from those of my own creation, belong to their creators. I simply used them for their associated songs.
