#WIPpet Wednesday #AmWriting 1/31/18 Full of Surprises

Yes, I’ve redone my website. I’ve done so several times, but this one might-well stick. I like the layout and the color scheme a great deal. It has the dark colors I appreciate, but it’s still easy on the eyes, and the font is enough for me to read without enlarging it.

It’s WIPpet Wednesday*! And we’re returning again to my WIP Cleaning House, a Queer Contemporary Fantasy novel almost entirely set in Southern Appalachia. I’ve kept you up in North Chicago for a while now, but Embreeville Mountain in Upper Northeast Tennessee is where the meat of the novel takes place. It’s an actual geographic location and not far at all from where I live. Embreeville Mountain strides the line between Washington and Unicoi counties and, yes, it is rural. If you want to see a detailed, zoomable, movable version of this map and not just a screenshot, go here.

This week’s WIPpet math goes as follows: 1/31/2018

2, 3+1+1, 8-1 = 257 words from Cleaning House

Cleaning (5)

The Setup: Cent has decided, with Betty’s help, that she really should go home to help her family, but she’s worried about how Betty will fare without her.

Betty speaks first in this WIPpet.

“I’ll be okay, baby-doll. Thanks for worrying.”

“I can’t help but.” Cent grew quiet, staring at Betty’s hands across her waist. “I hate it when you’re right.”

“Came as a surprise to me too.” Betty chuckled. “So, let’s get on your phone and buy you a bus ticket home.”

“The bus.” Cent’s frown deepened. “I just paid my rent so I don’t have the money. I’ve got a couple more checks coming, but…”

“Never fear. That’s what your Betty Boo is for.” Betty reached beneath the couch to pull out the credit card she kept tucked into the frame. “My ass is worn out, but my credit’s not… at least not completely.”

     “Your ass is fine, too.”

“You’ve never even seen it.” Betty giggled as she held out the card. “It’s spectacular by the way, but I’m not exactly your type so—” She pulled it back. “What is your type anyway?”

“I know when I see it.”

“You’re gonna get all smoke and mirrors mystery-like on me now?”

“All right.” How do I best put this into words? “I don’t like too female, too male… a blending, a… I like tall too, but it’s difficult to find someone taller than me.”

“Big, androgynous, and full of surprises. Got ya’.” Betty held out the card again. “The money’s a loan. Okay? I’ll need it back to keep up my hormones.”

“A loan. Definitely.” Cent dug her phone out of her pocket, hesitating when Betty placed the card in her hand. “I’m going to miss you.”

*WIPpet Wednesday is a blog hop hosted by Emily Wrayburn wherein writers share excerpts of their latest WIP. All genres and levels of accomplishment are welcome. The only stipulation is that the excerpt must coincide with the date in some manner. For example, on 10/8/14 you might share 10 lines from page 8, 8 paragraphs from chapter 14, or perhaps 18 sentences by doing WIPpet math and adding the day to the month. We’re flexible like that.

    • Yeah, me too. I’m like Cent. I like ’em tall. Not that I don’t like them shorter too… my Anna is some three inches shorter than me, but she’s still above average female height. As she said when she became part of my family… “I now live among giants.” And, yes, she certainly does. 🙂
