#RainbowSnippets #ScienceFiction Twenty-Four 12/9: Dead by Dark

Last night, I managed to type those hallowed words for any writer working on a manuscript: The End. Then I went to bed so the plot bunnies could run amok again in my head. But that manuscript isn’t ready for sharing (aside from the beginning chapters) so I’m sharing again from Surrogate: Hunted, which is due for release in February.

The Rainbow Snippets group on Facebook is “for LGBTQ+ authors, readers, and bloggers to gather once a week to share six sentences from a work of fiction– a WIP or a finished work or even a 6-sentence book recommendation. (no spoilers please!)”

Here’s another #RainbowSnippet* from Surrogate: Hunted.

The Setup: Etain and Brigit have run into a cultural/ language barrier with their Cycalk owners that might well land them in the local meat market.

Tip: If you want to know what Ytr and Atz are saying in this Snippet, try the Surrogate Language Primer. The words are arranged in simple alphabetical order for easy searching.

“She’s my god child.” Etain drew Brigit to her. “I won’t abandon her.”

“God child?” Atz stared at them. “She not your lover?”

“Ick! No!” Brigit pushed away from Etain when she translated. “She’s like my mom.”

“I’m like her mother. Please don’t separate us.”

“Tyn brval Atz.” Ytr sat back smiling. “Nabata badyan.”

“Nabata badyan?” Atz’s excited voice boomed through the courtyard. “Trn! Trn!” His voice faded, but Etain kept listening until Brigit touched her arm.

“I— I’m sorry.” Her eyes brimmed with tears. “I really screwed up.”

*Rainbow Snippets is a safe and welcoming space for LGBTQIA+ authors, readers, and bloggers to share 6 sentences each week from a work of fiction—published or in-progress—or a book recommendation. Feel free to join in!

  1. Congrats to “The End”!! It’s the best feeling ever. Maybe eve better than actual release date, because on release date people can be mean to your book baby, which they haven’t gotten the chance to be yet when you’ve just typed “The End” 🙂
