#WIPpet Wednesday #Amwriting The Homestead 11/29/17

(working cover)

This week’s WIPpet Wednesday* comes from Cleaning House, one of my current WIPs.  I’m over 73K into the manuscript and working hard on it for NaNoWriMo, which wraps up tomorrow. No, I won’t be finished with the first draft by then, but I hope to finish by the end of the year. Cleaning House is scheduled for release by Mountain Gap Books on October 1, 2018.

Here’s this week’s math. 11/29/2017  – I’m taking the nine, 9 paragraphs from Cleaning House.

“Cent? When you comin’ home?” Aunt Tess, a bit hard of hearing, all but yelled into the phone.

“I’m not planning to anytime soon, and you know dead-to-rights why.” Damn, I slide back into the accent far too easily.

“Your mama.” Tess huffed into the phone. “I’d tan her hide if I thought it’d do any good. I need you, girl. And you know that ain’t an easy thing for me to say.”

“Yeah, I know, but why’re you selling the homestead?”

“Same reason you won’t come home,” said Tess. “Your fool mama. She wants to cash out her part to use for her weddin’.”

“Can’t you just buy her out?”

“Her part is worth nearly sixty thousand. Too big a poke for my little piggy.”

“Yeah, mine too.” Cent ran her hand down her face. She had wonderful childhood memories of the homestead. Aunt Tess and Uncle Kinnon telling stories about faeries and booger monsters by the light of the river rock fireplace. Rainy days spent reading and playing games at the kitchen’s over-sized trestle table. Playing jacks and marbles and shooting off caps with Aubrey and the other cousins. Spitting river watermelon seeds for distance and at each other. The smell of the outhouse in the summer. Okay, so not every memory was wonderful, but she’d felt safe and comfortable there. “What about your trailer?”

“It’s got too many add-ons to move, so I guess I’ll leave it with the property and use the money to set a new one in a park somewheres close.” Each word sounded more defeated than the last. “I’ll make do, I reckon.”

*WIPpet Wednesday is a blog hop hosted by Emily Wrayburn wherein writers share excerpts of their latest WIP. All genres and levels of accomplishment are welcome. The only stipulation is that the excerpt must coincide with the date in some manner. For example, on 10/8/14 you might share 10 lines from page 8, 8 paragraphs from chapter 14, or perhaps 18 sentences by doing WIPpet math and adding the day to the month. We’re flexible like that.

    • I’d love a good beta reader who’s not from Appalachia! I’m here, so I know the traditions, the legends, the– you get it. I’ll give you a nudge when I get there, probably March-ish? Definitely by April since we’re looking for and October release.
