#RainbowSnippets #Sciencefiction Twenty 11/18: Truth Revealed

As life would have it, I’m hobbling around in a high-thigh to low-calf splint right now. At least a month of this? Holy– okay, so it’s not a cast. I can take it off at night and for a good scratch.

I’ll quit complaining and move on.

I am, however, happy to share that I’ve reached over 55K on my NaNoWriMo project, Cleaning House, and that I’m still plowing along. But, you should realize that nothing I write can be described as standard in length. My works routinely reach over 100K, and Hunted, which this week’s snippet comes from, is over 113K.

When I write, I go big.

Ooh, and did I say snippet? That means it’s Saturday, so it’s time for another #Rainbowsnippets!

The Rainbow Snippets group on Facebook is “for LGBTQ+ authors, readers, and bloggers to gather once a week to share six sentences from a work of fiction–a WIP or a finished work or even a 6-sentence book recommendation. (no spoilers please!)”

The edits on Surrogate: Hunted are almost finished, and we’re set for a March 1st release. The publisher and I will be looking for some reviewers soon, so if you’re interested, by all means, let me know and we’ll talk.

The Setup: Etain, who has been injured during a Ptrrryl attack on the captives, and Brigit have been shoved into a small room where they’re waiting for what they hope is the medical attention Etain needs.

What’s a Ptrrryl you ask? Here’s my glossary entry for the word. (Yes, I’m that big a Sci-Fi she-geek that I make my own glossaries. Deal with it.)

Ptrrryl–(Cycalk) [pt/rolled r/ eel] large, black predatory bird with hooked wing feathers

And here’s the Snippet:

“You should…have stayed with…the others.” Etain tried to push onto her elbows but fell back against the table.

“You come first.” Brigit tore Etain’s robe away from the embedded feathers. “They’re deep.” She gasped and stepped back, ripping the fabric from Etain’s back. “Damn— what…what’re all these other marks?” Brigit bent close to stare into Etain’s eyes. “What happened those nine days you were gone?”

*Rainbow Snippets is a safe and welcoming space for LGBTQIA+ authors, readers, and bloggers to share 6 sentences each week from a work of fiction—published or in-progress—or a book recommendation. Feel free to join in!

    • I dunno where my initial reply disappeared to, but here it is again.

Thanks for the hug, we all need one now and again, but I was merely being whiny. I get frustrated when my body doesn’t work as it should… which is beginning to happen more frequently. Autoimmune issues means things wear out quicker than they should, especially joints.

And, Etain. She and Brigit have been in a crash and burn scenario for a while now, but balance is coming, so stay tuned.

  1. Hello! First-time reader of your blog here! Glad to have found a queer space!

Also, wow – that is plenty on NaNo, and there’s still one third to go! Impressive. 🙂 And if you routinely hit 100K on your work, do you have any advice on how to keep it cohesive and maintain the tension in a longer work? The one time I did over 100K on a text, I couldn’t keep it together… It was all over the place, and should’ve ended three times before I just dropped the whole project!
