I am currently in the midst of NaNoWriMo. It’s my first time doing the event, and, while it’s great motivation, I’m not quite loving it as much I thought I would. However, I am committed, so I have every intention of winning come hell or high water. My goal is to finish my current WIP’s initial rough draft by the end of the year, with my end of NaNoWriMo word count being at least 65K.
I hit 40K last night.
We’ll see if I can continue the pace.
Oh, and BTW, Happy Saturday! It’s time for another #Rainbowsnippet!
The Rainbow Snippets group on Facebook is “for LGBTQ+ authors, readers, and bloggers to gather once a week to share six sentences from a work of fiction–a WIP or a finished work or even a 6-sentence book recommendation (no spoilers please!).”
This week’s Rainbow Snippet comes again from Surrogate: Hunted, the second novel in the Surrogate Series. This is not my current WIP, but rather, my next novel release that’s scheduled for March 2018. You can read excerpts from my current WIP, Cleaning House, HERE.
The setup for today’s snippet: Etain may have physically survived her latest ordeal, but mentally…
Notes: 1) Leslie is Etain and Brigit’s cell mate. 2) Brigit is Etain’s goddaughter. 3) She-Beast is the manifestation of Etain’s breeding instinct.
“Aunt Etain?”
Etain looked up to see Brigit staring at her. “What— yes?”
“I said they took me to the monitor room yesterday.” Brigit rolled her shoulders forward and dropped her head to stare at the floor. She needn’t say more. Leslie was taken to the monitor room on a routine basis. “Rntys made me look at the vid.”
“Oh, my sweet cub. I’m so very sorry.” I’m trying, Medi, and I do care, but—
She should be thankful for what we did to protect her. She-Beast laid in a dark corner of Etain’s mind, bloody-faced, hollow-eyed, and whimpering— more of a wild animal than Etain had ever sensed before. Tell her or I will.

I feel for both of them here. At least they have each other for the moment.

They’re both miserable at this point, but things will change.

Uh-oh. Not anything Brigit’s going to want to hear?

No, but she’s going to find out eventually.

From ugly comes beauty, or so the saying goes. And you’re right, they do have each other to lean on.

The duality between Etain and She-Beast is intense…all the more at this moment when they’re both focused on Brigit in pain. I feel for both of them.

How awful. But the anguish comes across very well.

I try. This is an awful situation, but I’m attempting so show that they’re trying hard to make the best of it.

Well done on hitting 40k for NaNo, Jeanne. You’re doing great.
