I’m tired, really tired, because we spent much of yesterday automobile shopping. I hate shopping for such things. It’s tedious and mathy. It’s all about wheeling and dealing. It’s physically and mentally exhausting– and you better have done your homework before you walk through that showroom door. Thankfully, we did, and I think we managed a fairly good deal. Time will tell on that one.
Now to sell the old car. Dealers never give much for trade-ins, so we’ll be selling next week. More wheeling and dealing. Sigh. But that’s still a few days away so…
It’s Saturday, and that means it’s time for a new Rainbowsnippet*!
The Rainbow Snippets group on Facebook is “for LGBTQ+ authors, readers, and bloggers to gather once a week to share six sentences from a work of fiction–a WIP or a finished work or even a 6-sentence book recommendation (no spoilers please!).”
This week’s RainbowSnippet comes from Surrogate: Hunted.
The Setup: Etain, Mateo, Brigit, and Robert have no idea what has just happened to their shuttle and things are quickly becoming even more confusing.
Mateo stared out the shuttle window. “Are those trees?”
“I think— images, they are images.” The renderings played with Etain’s eyes. The walls seemed alive with an almost convincing display of an ancient deciduous forest complete with dense, ferny undergrowth, and the floor resembled a worn, dirt path, but she knew they were in the belly of a ship, inside a hanger large enough to have swallowed all three shuttles.
“Look!” Robert recoiled when one of the tree images slid open and a half-dozen bipedal, broad-shouldered, white-cloaked creatures entered the hanger, closely followed by a seventh figure donning a azure blue cloak that grazed the top of its heavy, black boots, revealing bits of white-pelted knee as it walked in long strides toward the shuttles.
This one’s in charge. Etain gritted her teeth when she spied a green-handled blade projecting from the blue-clad figure’s boot top.

Tense moment. Let’s hope it doesn’t have the intention of using the blade.

These creatures don’t need knives to accomplish their goals. It’s merely symbolic of what they’re capable of. Etain and the others will eventually figure this out.

I love the way you play with reality here — are they really there or are they an image?

Thanks! The reality vs imagery was my point. They don’t know what’s real at this point.

Thanks. This one took a bit to get right.

Oh, this is interesting. Hard to tell where the images end and reality begins. I can imagine that’s really disorienting. I’m guessing that’s why whoever “they” are created this environment.

Exactly. If you can confuse your quarry, they’re easier to bag. (lots of foreshadowing in that sentence) 🙂

Etain seems to recognize the blade. I wonder why?

She recognizes the white pelt more than anything, but she’s wary of the knife and what it might mean for them.
