#RainbowSnippets Twelve 9/9/17: Taking Notice

Welcome to Rainbow Snippet* Saturday!

This is a worrisome Saturday and for good reason. We’ve friends in South Central Florida who are determined to ride out Irma in their home. They’re not on the coast, so they’re out of storm-surge danger, but still. Bless them. I wish them safety and good health.  It’s far from their first hurricane, but when words like “catastrophic” and “nuclear” are used in a storm’s description we can’t help but worry.

My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone in the path of nature’s fury.

The Rainbow Snippets group on Facebook is “for LGBTQ+ authors, readers, and bloggers to gather once a week to share six sentences from a work of fiction–a WIP or a finished work or even a 6-sentence book recommendation (no spoilers please!).”

This week’s Rainbow Snippet comes again from Surrogate: Hunted, the second novel in the Surrogate Series.

This week’s snippet is titled “Taking Notice” because of its ending and shows She-Beast being her usual, nerve-wracking self. Can you imagine possessing an instinct so strong that it presents in such a consistently annoying manner?

The Setup: Etain is on her way to Safe Harbor to retrieve her goddaughter Brigit and Brigit’s boyfriend, Robert, when she finds herself with an unexpected traveling companion– Robert’s father, entomologist and Earth native, Mateo Sato.

“So I’ve read, Your Majesty.” Doctor Sato, or Mateo, as he insisted on being called, was a trim man of Etain’s height. He had a pleasant face with high cheek bones, intensely blue eyes, and skin the color of Takran driftwood– sandy hued with soft amber undertones. Three silver hoops hung from each ear, a heavy silver chain supporting a five-pointed star emblem hung around his neck, and his thick, brunette hair ran down his back in two straight braids. He seemed comfortable with himself, something Etain had noticed many Humans were not. “It’s nice to finally get some one-on-one discussion with you, but I wish it was under different circumstances.” His mouth curled into a gentle smile he directed toward her.

Hello. Hello! She-Beast sat up to better see him.

    • Thanks. I agree. Mateo is an interesting man. And, thanks, again. We’re hoping and praying that we hear from our friends soon. They seriously discussed leaving, but one of them is a surgical nurse so her skills will be needed in the aftermath.

    • Describing Mateo came from the question, how would an alien explain a human’s coloring? Tan, brown…sure, but they’re boring. Cream, mocha, latte… decidedly Human earth terms, if not a bit cliche, and one’s Etain couldn’t use. So, I tried to use terms Etain would be familiar with… Takran and Gno’ terms, hence the description.
