“45 Hours Before” #WIPpet Wednesday #SciFi 9/6/17

This post comes with an apple-butter-free guarantee. If you don’t know what I’m referring to, just look back at my last few WIPpet Wednesdays.

WIPpet Wednesday is a blog hop hosted by Emily Wrayburn where authors share excerpts from a WIP. *

Here’s my WIPpet for 9/6/2017

I’m using the one and the zero to create the number 10.

Simple enough.

This WIPpet comes from Chapter Ten of Surrogate: Traditions. The Chapter is titled “45 Hours Before.”

The Setup: For someone in Etain’s circle, two decades of commitment apparently means very little, if anything. Or is it the situation itself causing him to lash out?

Note: Salk Su, Takla for sweet sand, is Dresh’s pet name for Etain.

“Are you having an affair?” Please say no. Deny it. Her hopes faded when he curled his mouth like he was about to hiss.

“That’s a ridiculous question coming from you.” He stood in the doorway to Dresh’s home office, his sleeping space since they’d been fighting.

“That is unfair.” She felt Merch’s hand slide into hers, a reminder that she wasn’t alone no matter the outcome.

“Is it now?” He glanced from Merch to Dresh. “All right. So, I’m having an affair with Samudra Ona. What’s that have to do with any of this?” He waved his hand toward Samudra’s image on the vid.

“You admit to having an affair?” I can’t wrap my head around—don’t understand, don’t— “Why?”

“The irony, Etain, can’t you see it?” He sneered at her. “You share your beach with others all the time, and you ask me why I’m having an affair?”

“I…I’ve always stayed in my…my circle. You know this.” She released Merch’s hand to sit up taller. You’re not going to make me feel ashamed of who I am. “You encouraged Mateo.”

“That idiot’s been groveling at your feet for over six years.” He wrinkled his nose. “Mateo being included meant I dealt with you less.”

“You knew my species’ requirements before we were ever together.” She growled at him. “You knew—”

“And I’ve hated every moment of it.” He pulled his hands behind his back in a blatant sign of Takla disgust.

“Liar!” She howled anger and lunged forward with her hands extended, but Dresh caught her by the waist, pulling her back.

“Don’t, Salk Su. He’s not worth the energy.”

*WIPpet Wednesday is a blog hop hosted by Emily Wrayburn wherein writers share excerpts of their latest WIP. All genres and levels of accomplishment are welcome. The only stipulation is that the excerpt must coincide with the date in some manner. For example, on 10/8/14 you might share 10 lines from page 8, 8 paragraphs from chapter 14, or perhaps 18 sentences by doing WIPpet math and adding the day to the month. We’re flexible like that.

  1. Ooooooh, boy. I think he’s kind of always struggled with this arrangement at least a bit, no? I’m not sure she ought to be entirely surprised. I’d like to pop him one, though. (And Dresh…is it wrong how much I love her?)

    • Yeah, he’s struggled, and Etain has tried so hard to be patient, but, as she said, he knew from the start. And Dresh… it’s funny how she started as an antagonistic character when I started writing this series. She was actually going to be the villain until she sat me down and we had a chat about it. Such a hard-ass on the outside, but, apparently, that’s what Etain and Merch like… and me too.

      Go figure.

      • Ha! Count me among the people who like it. She’s, uh, kind of my type when it comes to women. *blush* Well, as much of a “type” as I have, anyway. I’ve really enjoyed the development of her relationship with Etain.

Etain’s nicer than I am. I’d have lost patience with him ages ago. She’s never been unclear about anything, and she’s such a loving person that I can’t see how he’s not able to see how much room she has in her heart for everyone, including (maybe especially) him.

      • I’ve enjoyed Dresh too. She is one of my favorite creations.

Etain loves with all her being, but part of her, I believe, feels very alone on Takran. She is the only one of her species there. But her husband often can’t see past his own people’s traditions to see *her.”

Glad you like the WIPpet and the series thus far. 🙂

  2. Oy, dude! I’m sure this would be a difficult situation to be in if it’s not something you’re used to, but it sounds like he got into it willingly, so I can’t feel too much sympathy for him right now.

    • That’s the thing… he knew what he was getting into and has been there for twenty + years without complaint. So, why now? *ulterior motives*
