Right now, I’m wondering if the underworld is filled with half-cooked apple butter. Surely not, but we’re still processing apples by the crockpot full. It’s become drudgery. FYI, it takes a whole lot of apples to make a jar of apple butter, and we’ve made seven pints at this point. However, we’ll enjoy all the work come January.
That’s what I keep telling myself, anyway.
Regardless, the house smells of cinnamon and nutmeg. Absolutely divine.
This week’s WIPpet Wednesday comes again from Surrogate: Traditions, the third novel in the Surrogate Series… and I promise it has nothing to do with apple butter. My newest WIP, however, set in Appalachia, might well contain some apple butter. We’ve a great family story concerning my grandfather and apple butter that might make it into the novel. We’ll see. Regardless, I won’t be sharing anything from the new WIP for some time to come.
Here’s the WIPpet math for 8/30/2017:
Going with the 8 again. Eight paragraphs. It’s an easy choice when you’re not feeling math-ish.
Set up: Not needed. But the question is who bit Etain and why?
“He bit you?” Kalli pulled down the magnifier on her surgical hood to examine Etain’s bottom lip. “Hand me the subdermal sealant, Jon.”
“It’s that deep?” He bent to see for himself. “Good grief.” They were in Merch and Dresh’s bedroom, Etain stretched face-up on the bed, Merch beside her, throwing enraged glances toward one of the living room’s occupants. “Clean through.”
“Bottom feeding—” Merch grimaced when Etain looked at her. “He’s at the top of my shit list again.”
“I’m going to put a couple of stitches on each side, too.” Kalli stepped back fifteen minutes later. “That doesn’t look bad at all, but we’ll still need to laser over it after the stitches come out.”
“It is going to scar?” Etain moved to touch her lip, but Kalli pushed her hand away.
“Nothing that we can’t take care of.” Kalli stopped her from sitting up. “Turn over and we’ll examine your back while we’re here.”
“Come on.” Jon finished stowed the surgical supplies and turned around holding a small bio-reader. “You’re long overdue.”

*WIPpet Wednesday is a blog hop wherein writers share excerpts of their latest WIP. All genres and levels of accomplishment are welcome. The only stipulation is that the excerpt must coincide with the date in some manner. For example, on 10/8/14 you might share 10 lines from page 8, 8 paragraphs from chapter 14, or perhaps 18 sentences by doing WIPpet math and adding the day to the month. We’re flexible like that.
