We’ll be moving our youngest into his college dorm this weekend, so I’m scheduling this Rainbowsnippet* early.
I am again working from Surrogate: Hunted, which I just submitted to my publisher. Hooray!
*accepts her participation ribbon and trods off the stage*
It’s another step in the process, another item checked off the list. *eyes the manuscript for Surrogate: Traditions.* Yeah, you’re next. And so are you Cleaning House. And so are… shiny squirrels… so pretty!
Just proved my total Sci-Fi geekdom with that meme, didn’t I? *shrugs as she seriously considers partaking in a Firefly binge.*
Yeah. Okay, back on track. Hunted is scheduled for an early 2018 release. The Surrogate Series is being published by Supposed Crimes, the home of kick-ass queer fiction, so go check them out.

The Setup: Merch has awakened Etain in the middle of the night for an urgent reason: They are discussing the situation over the vid.
“She’s gone, so I’ve no choice but to alert the palace guard,” said Dresh.
“Want one of us to come over?” Leigheas squeezed Etain’s shoulder as he spoke.
What was that old Human saying I recently read— oh, yes. Way to throw me under the bus. She sighed when he leaned in to nuzzle her ear.

Heh, I know it’s used often, but I really enjoy aliens learning human idioms. I think it’s because I tend to be so literal myself, and I think idioms are fascinating and strange. It’s fun to see them from someone else’s perspective.
Etain has picked up several from Merch, whose father had a penchant for them. I like using them and making them up for my species to use as well. Language play built on world building. 🙂

Do they even know what a bus is?

She’s using it as more of a literary reference or idiom here. And on a world of billions I am quite certain there is mass transit.

Intriguing. Idioms are always fun when learning a new language. 🙂

Is “cold shoulder” gonna be the reply to that? 😉

I think Etain’s too concerned about Merch right now to deal with Leigheas’ snuggly deferment. 🙂
