The Rainbow Snippets group on Facebook is “for LGBTQ+ authors, readers, and bloggers to gather once a week to share six sentences from a work of fiction–a WIP or a finished work or even a 6-sentence book recommendation (no spoilers please!).”
Here’s a another #RainbowSnippet* from Surrogate: Hunted. If you’ve been reading along, you know Amna Dresh is retired military with a whole lot of clout, but she has two definite soft spots, namely her lovers Merch and Etain. She’s also Etain’s ottonol, her She-Beast wrangler. In this little Snippet, you’re going to see Dresh at her military best.
“No.” Merch covered her nose with one hand as she extended the other to Etain, drawing her from the bench. “I know you won’t be able to tear away from your kids if you go back home, so why don’t you use Brigit’s shower?”
“Or share ours.” Dresh narrowed her eyes and jerked her head toward the guards who scrambled to surround them when they stepped through the door. “The security level is low so twenty paces ahead and twenty behind. Do it!”
Now, my basis for Amna Dresh sits right beside me. My spouse, Anna, is retired United State Marine Corps, a Gunnery Sargent, and from what I’ve heard she had two distinct personas during her military career. In uniform, she was tough as nails, colorful with her words, (as are most current and former military, including myself) and would work circles anyone who said she couldn’t do something. Out of uniform, she was a quiet, bookish, gentle woman who loved deeply. I’ve only known the latter, (we met after she retired) but I see glimpses of Gunny every now and then. Tick her off, and she appears for a brief moment, but a moment is all that’s ever needed.
Hubba. *fans herself* Yeah.
My tough Gunny is all mine, but I let you see bits of her through Amna Dresh.
Enjoy, because I get the privilege on a daily basis. *looks at her wedding band and smiles*
Note: Gunny has never made an appearance toward me or our children. No. That’s not my Anna. But those who try to slight us or treat us or any of our family with anything less than respect… she’s very protective of us, just as we are of her.
*Rainbow Snippets is a safe and welcoming space for LGBTQIA+ authors, readers, and bloggers to share 6 sentences each week from a work of fiction—published or in-progress—or a book recommendation. Feel free to join in!
There is almost nothing I like more than women in uniform. Which is maybe odd, because I have no such feelings about men in uniform. Send me a guy in glitter, though…*swoon* (I think I just like people who defy expectations.)
It sounds like they’re in a situation where Dresh needs to keep on top of things here.

Dresh is the retired palace guard captain (the Quineral), so her nose is into everything.
And women in uniform…. oh, yes. I’ve always been that way even when I was one… women and men both, but I don’t like typical male military cuts (unless it’s on a woman, lol) Give me a guy with a well-kept pony tail any day, even in uniform.
Heh, I find all kinds of things very nice to look at. I’ve always really loved very feminine guys. I definitely agree about military cuts on women, though, and ponytails on men–that describes a lot of the people in my own family.
And pooh on WP for marking my comment as spam. That’s odd.
*shrugs* Maybe WP doesn’t like glitter? I’m just glad I caught it. And you can’t live in my home unless you’re agreeable to a 6’4″ man with shoulder length curls skipping through the house at regular intervals. Now, he’d like the glitter.
Love my eldest son… he’s a hoot and a half and a free spirit to boot.
Well, Etain might, (and she’d probably like it) but Merch would tell her to f* off then laugh and kiss her. Don’t underestimate Etain, though, you’ll see her kick some serious butt later on.
Lemme think.. My house is six hours away from Atlanta and… oh, wait. There’s the whole time and space thing. She lives about 1,000 years from now and in another galaxy so you’ll have to wait. 😉
From Merch’s nose-covering, I’m guessing Etain needs a shower sooner rather than later?

Well, at this point, Etain and Dresh have been sparring for over an hour so I’m certain they’re both rather ripe.

As for glitter… not so much.

Goodness! Dresh says “jump,” and I’d be asking “how high?”

Hubba, hubba. So, er, can Amna visit me in Atlanta? Hubby won’t mind, honest! 😉 Lovely snippet.

Is it wrong of me to love the description of real life Amna better than the snippet? In that case, I apologize! 🙂
