Busy week. Happy 4th to those in the U.S. (myself included) We’ll probably will be doing the normal family get-together, so I’m going to schedule this WIPpet* early.
This #WIPpet will conclude Chapter One of Surrogate: Traditions.
WIPpet math: 7/5/2017 – This WIPpet is 201 words in length, so I’m using those numbers. Higher math be damned.
“She should stay here to watch you.” Etain sighed when Merch said no. There’s no use arguing. “Let me tell her.” Mary crawled up Etain’s arm and onto her shoulder, clearly proud to sit in a position normally reserved for her species’ queens, gripping Etain’s shirt so hard her foot barbs dug into Etain’s blue-black skin beneath.
“Take my pulse pistol.”
“I have my own.” Etain stared at the floor hatch they’d worked so hard to seal.
“I refuse to leave you unarmed.”
“Did you see…how many weapons I had…on me when we…came up here?” Merch’s grin proved weak. “But hurry back…all right?”
“I will.” Etain tucked the extra gun into her waistband and began working on the innermost thumb screws. It took considerable effort to loosen them, but when she opened the hatch it groaned then popped as air rushed in. It was less humid than what they’d been breathing, but…
“Damn, what a stink.” Merch rolled to see her. “Be extra careful.”
“Love you too.” There’s no going back. No…Etain slid the ladder through the hatch and stepped onto it. “Ready, Mary?”
“Go! Go!” Mary danced on her shoulder.
Go, indeed. But what’s ahead—that’s what I fear.

* WIPpet Wednesday is a blog hop wherein writers share excerpts of their latest WIP. All genres and levels of accomplishment are welcome. The only stipulation is that the excerpt must coincide with the date in some manner. For example, on 10/8/14 you might share 10 lines from page 8, 8 paragraphs from chapter 14, or perhaps 18 sentences by doing WIPpet Math and adding the day to the month. We’re flexible like that
