Teens of all humanoid species, I learned from my own youth and through my children, (two of three are now in their twenties) can be pains in adult backsides. Brigit Feney, Etain Ixtii’s god daughter in Surrogate: Hunted, is no exception. My WIPpet Wednesday* this week (6/7/2017) comes from Chapter Six, the first twenty-four paragraphs (7+17 in WIPpet math), which isn’t nearly as much content as you’d think.
“Brigit with you?” asked Merch as soon as Etain opened her hand-held. Dresh stood beside Merch in a tank top and sleep sarong, her hair loose about her face, softening her features.
“Brigit? No.” Etain rubbed her eyes. “Why?” She glanced at the clock. Three in the morning palace time. She slid from Leigheas’ arms, out of their nest, and tip-toed to the main room so she wouldn’t wake their cubs.
“I woke up hungry, so I went to the eat-in.” Dresh rubbed the back of her neck. “Brigit’s door was open so I thought I’d check on her—”
“And she wasn’t there!” Merch wrung her hands. “I was never this bad, I swear!”
“Where would she go at this hour?”
“What’s going on?” Leigheas emerged from the bedroom carrying her robe.
“Brigit’s gone.” Etain slipped into the robe when he held it out. “What are you going to do?”
“I’ve no choice but to alert the palace guard,” said Dresh.
“Want one of us to come over?” Leigheas patted Etain’s shoulder as he spoke.
What was that old Human saying I recently read— oh, yes. Way to throw me under the bus. She sighed as Leigheas nuzzled her ear.
No, you’re not.
“Would you?” Merch stared into the vid.
Dresh was on her hand-held, waking Guard Captain Vahl. “Yes. She’s seventeen…how long? We’ll be waiting.” She looked at the vid. “He’ll be here in ten minutes.”
“So, will I.” Etain flipped off the vid and removed her hand-held. “Where do you think she is?”
“With Robby.” Leigheas yawned and walk to toward the bedroom. “I’d check with his father first.” Etain stood in the doorway, frowning as he climbed into their nest without her.
“You will have to wake the children for ‘Morning Song’ and—”
“I do it every time you’re called to settle a Panpobal issue.” He raised the blankets, then stopped, throwing them aside as he sat up. “I think I’ll soak since I can’t be beside you.”
“I might be gone for hours, so set your water alarm.” Etain grabbed her clothes and went to the bathroom, dressing in the far-too-bright artificial lighting. “I need to go.” She tucked her overmane under a headband while Leigheas watched.
“I know it might take a while.” He opened the water taps to fill the tub. “Let me know what happens. Be careful. Love you.”
“Love you too.” She startled the four guards posted outside the apartment.
“Good morning, Your Majesty,” mumbled one of the two who followed her.
“Good morning to you too.” Women. Amna had rotated her guards so She-Beast wouldn’t be tempted.
“You’re up early, Your Majesty. I hope nothing is amiss,” said the other guard.
* WIPpet Wednesday is a blog hop wherein writers share excerpts of their latest WIP. All genres and levels of accomplishment are welcome. The only stipulation is that the excerpt must coincide with the date in some manner. For example, on 10/8/14 you might share 10 lines from page 8, 8 paragraphs from chapter 14, or perhaps 18 sentences by doing WIPpet Math and adding the day to the month. We’re flexible like that.
